Hot Tech Skills Bend Resume-Writing Rules

Hot Tech Skills Bend Resume-Writing RulesHot Tech Skills Bend Resume-Writing RulesWhat grabbed the recruiters eye welches the security pros certification, on top of his resume and smack dab in front of her face.CISSP Hows that for a resume title? The acronym stands for Certified Information Systems Security Professional. Listing just the acronym without spelling it out, let alone using a more generic term such as Security Engineer, might put off the uninitiated. But to recruiters and hiring managers in the know, CISSP says it all Its one of hottest tech qualifications on the market.Make no mistake Most resumes need to be tailored to an HR generalist. But for a few specialized roles, such as this area of security technology, recruiters steeped in the discipline are trained to look for specific jargon like CISSP, and putting it front and center makes sense. Before you bend resume rules to lead with a term like CISSP, do market research to find out if your qualification is really a golden ticket to a new job. That means talking to recruiters familiar with your field as well as peers in the same role and former bosses. The CISSP certification is very sought after, very hard to get, said Elizabeth Lions, an author and career coach who was headhunting recently for just that type of professional. In 10 seconds, the candidate made me know he had that credential. Its to engineering as CPA is to accounting. Its a credential thats sought after, that takes time and energy, and that separates him out from other candidates. The hiring process is far from transparent, so its always enlightening when a recruiter pulls back the curtain on the mysterious decision-making process - the one that makes them pluck a resume out of the applicant pile. This time around, Lions shared some specifics about what it was in this professionals resume that scored him the job. Read on for a peek into her impressions of a winning resume.Revising Resume Rules for Special CasesMost of the time, resume -writing protocol mandates that resumes start off with name and contact information, followed immediately by a title. An executive summary most often follows the title. In this case, the candidate, Nate, started with his name and contact information. But then, in place of a job title such as Security Engineer, he instead listed the title Certifications, under which he put the sole acronym CISSP.Nate then replaced the Executive Summary with a Skills section that contained a slew of bullet points, including * Checkpoint * Juniper * Cisco * Bluecoat * Nortel * Crossbeam * Nokia * SourceFire * RSA * TippingPoint * Qradar * Qualys * Solaris * Tufin * Firemon * ASA * Citrix * Netscaler * DLPIf youre as hot as a CISSP, the rules are clearly a little different, Lions said. Nates certification is his title. His list of skills is his executive summary. His title is Security Engineer, she said. If you did a Google search on the top most sought-after IT skills, thats in the top 5. I already know hes in high demand.A title like Security Engineer can mean a lot of different things and include duties that dont necessarily get into the nitty-gritty skills her client was seeking, she said. By inserting the specific certificate title, Nate got across the fact that he had met the certificates rigorous requirements a minimum of five years of direct full-time security work experience in two or more of 10 information security domains. (A four-year college degree, a masters degree in Information Security, or a number of other certifications can substitute for one of those years.)Catching the Recruiters EyeIn a nutshell, heres why Nates resume jumped out of the pile for Lions, in her own wordsHe outlined all his skills at the top, so they are easy to find for any recruiter, HR person or manager. His skills are in top demand, and he knows it.He put his recent credential at the top, knowing that this credential is hard to find in the market. He has worked for top companies that are well-kn own.In addition, Nate had his act together when Lions interviewed him. Here are factors that impressed her beyond the printed page, again in her own wordsHe was very clear in his career moves, which were well thought out when I spoke to him.He had a profile of where he wanted to work and where he did not want to work.He could clearly tell me why he is all that and a bag of chips. He has his sell.He knows who/what/where he wants to be when he grows up.

Good people Why good people are successful people

Good people Why good people are successful peopleGood people Why good people are successful peopleGood people - its a phrase we hear all the time, both in the office and out of it. What do we really mean when we say that someone is good?We recognize that quality when were around it, and we can feel goodness when we experience it, but to really describe it, specifically and fully, is challenging to say the least. Certainly, we dont understand goodness to the degree it deserves.Good and goodness are words so embedded in ur everyday colloquies theyve almost lost their meaning. If we take on the burden of creating a practical, actionable definition of goodness and putting that goodness into practice, we need to acknowledge that the topic has been a core question and source of inquiry for the worlds greatest philosophers, psychologists, and spiritual leaders for millennia. As we can binnensee from Aristotles relentless quest to better understand the human condition and human spirit, from 2 0th-century psychosocial explorations of different stages of desire and development by the likes of Abraham Maslow or Erik Erikson, and from many faiths common principles of kindness, it is a near-universal assumption that we should all live our lives striving to be good people. But how can we think of goodness and good people as concepts that can be practically applied in the business world and understand their far-reaching benefits?First, we need to confront the ambiguities in the way businesses use the term good. There are two sides of the word. When hiring employees and managing teams, we often use good as a synonym for competent. But goodness is far mora than a persons competencies goodness is about peoples humanity, their values, the qualities inherent in their character, and other intangible traits. We, therefore, need to distinguish goodness as competency from goodness as values, and we need to understand that the latter ought to take greater priority.ConsiderWD-40, which has a unique place in history and pop culture. It was first used on the Atlas space rocket, but then consumers began clamoring for it. Salesmen literally sold the now-iconic blue-and-yellow cans out of their car trunks. Today, WD-40 is a household name. Annual sales exceed $350 million, and the company is valued at more than $1.5 billion. WD-40s meteoric success makes it easy to overlook the most unique aspect of the company the people who work there.WD-40 has managed to retain its staff at three times the national average. Ninety-seven percent of employees report that they love - not just like - to tell people they work at WD-40.The companys CEO, Garry Ridge, is unequivocal about the source of WD-40s remarkable success Its about people, its about learning, its about our culture, its about our tribalism, he explained to me.What makes WD-40 a special place to work is something that transcends the talent of its employees - which I am sure is great, but not far oben liegend to the talen t of competitors employees. WD-40s greatest competitive advantage is its culture of good people. Its leadership has created a company that its employees believe in authentically. They genuinely find meaning both in their work and in their coworkers. And thus, WD-40s incredible results, year after year.Despite the massive success of companies like WD-40, many people still believe that theres no place in the business world for soft concepts like good, goodness, and good people. Business is business after all, right? These people assume that leading a good business means focusing solely on getting results. But the truth is, now that prolonged competition, greater availability of information, and technological advancements have created a more level playing field, people matter more than anything else. They add value at every point in the organization. The best companies arent just machines to maximize profits they create widespread, positive change in their employees, their communities, and their industries. When good people imprint good values and qualities onto others, and they, in turn, do the same, they create enduring value and forward progress in businesses. And even if you only care about maximizing profits and returns, goodness and good people benefit the bottom line as well.By putting the meaning back into the suitcase term of good people, we can elevate ourselves and the people around us - and change the face of business, perhaps even whole societies and the entire world. After working in and advising organizations both good and not so good, starting a few companies of my own, and investing in about 50 others, Ive come to believe that pursuing goodness in yourself while surrounding yourself with good people is the only leadership decision that really, truly matters. When we ask ourselves why we admire leaders (or for that matter, people in general), the answer is predictable they put people first and understand and practice the values that underpin goodnes s.These leaders are committed to improving everyone around them just as much as they are committed to improving themselves. They feel a duty to serve others by inspiring and shaping them to become the best, fullest version of themselves. The leaders and people who do this, as management guru Tom Peters says, dont create followers. Instead, they create more leaders. I have come to believe this, and I see people and their values asI have come to believe this, and I see people and their values as the most critical competitive advantage that exists- period. This article is an excerpt from Good People The Only Leadership Decision That Really Matters by Anthony Tjan in agreement with Portfolio, an imprint of Penguin Publishing Group, a division of Penguin Random House LLC. How I Finally Got Job Interviews at My Dream Companies

How I Finally Got Job Interviews at My Dream CompaniesHow I Finally Got Job Interviews at My Dream Companies In 2013, I welches ready for a career change .Well, to even say I had a career is generous. Itd had been four years since I graduated college with an Econ degree and I was jumping between one random thing to another to pay the rent. I was stuck. Amongst other things, this included trying to sell ebooks and pants (yes, like real pants) online. I had learned to make basic iPhone apps, but it was immediately clear I wasnt going to be coming up with the next app idea that was going to go viral.I tischset a goal for myself to get a job at a top-tier tech company to jumpstart my career.I spent days perfecting my resume , but couldnt get an interview. Naturally, I assumed that meant I had to work on it more. I agonized over every word and drove myself crazy with formatting. I finally perfected it, and every time I applied to a job posting, I was filled with hope. Th is is going to be the job gets me into tech , I thought .But I wasnt getting interviews. Even when I was applying through referrals , I wouldnt hear back. Eventually, it hit meI was applying to the wrong roles.I was going after software engineering and product manager roles at brand-name tech companies with limited programming and no product experience. No wonder I was getting rejected left and right - I was applying to roles I aspired to one day have, but in reality, my background and skills didnt meet the needs for those positions. At least, not yet. I had to change my approach.Instead of thinking about what I wanted, I thought about it from the companys perspective What needs do they have that I can fill right now? This approach is especially helpful if youre transitioning into tech from a different industry, non-traditional background or just dont have the relevant experiences for the role you want.Since I didnt have the background or experience to get interviews for my aspir ational roles, I started looking for positions that would be stepping stones toward them. I looked for roles that would give me relevant experiences for my next job - I was thinking two roles ahead. Before applying to my aspirational role, I wanted to make sure I had two things. First, experience working at a brand-name tech company. Second, a role that gave me an understanding of how end-users used products. I knew those experiences would help prepare me for the job I would apply to next. With that in mind, I honed in my job search on technical customer support roles. I wanted an end-user facing role where I could leverage the technical skills I built up learning how to make simple iPhone apps earlier in the year.Once I started to apply for those roles, I was getting interviews, not rejections, left and right.I had my sights set on the Forward Deployed Engineer role at Palantir and what later became the Product Specialist role at Dropbox . These two roles hit the criteria for t he experiences I wanted to gain for future roles. Just as important, I had the background and skills that these roles needed now .After going through onsite interviews at both companies, I eventually joined Dropbox as a Product Specialist (then called Embedded User Operations Engineer). I was able to immediately contribute in my first role at Dropbox and in one year, I transferred to the Partnerships team. A year after that, I successfully went through the internal interview process to become a Product Manager, my aspirational role.By recommending stepping-stone roles, Im not telling you to sell yourself short - Im telling you to invest in your future. When youre trying to break into tech, for example, focus on getting into a tech company first, then transitioning into your aspirational role.Everyones situation is different, so by all means, if youd like, go after your aspirational role right away. But if youre not even getting interviews, you may want to take a step back and cons ider if youre applying for the right roles.DJ Chung is a Product Manager at Dropbox. He regularly writes on Hack Career about how to transition into the tech industry.

Plan Now For 2014 Summer Hiring

Plan Now For 2014 Summer HiringPlan Now For 2014 Summer HiringPlan Now For 2014 Summer Hiring Chinsky MatusonThe forecast for 2014 summer hiring this year is sunnier than it has been in a long time. The dark cloud hanging over small geschftlicher umgang owners during the recession has just about dissipated. Theres a new feeling in the air called optimism and its continuing to fuel private companies growth plans for 2014, according to PWCs Trendsetter Barometer. If your small business is positioned for growth this year, nows the time to plan your 2014 summer hiring before Memorial Day comes along. Heres how to begin.Develop a hiring plan. During the recession it was easy to shoot from the hip in terms of hiring. If your business picked up, you could simply place a Were hiring sign in the window and by the end of the week the position would be filled. This is no longer the case. Its going to be a challenging summer hiring season if the past quarter is any indication of whats to come. An i mproved economy means that summer job seekers have a lot more choices than in the past.Knowing how to hire the right candidate will allow you to quickly extend job offers to those who you believe are a good fit for your organization. This will also help to ensure that you dont wind up having to re-staff positions midway through the summer hiring season because poor employee performance.Be nimble. 2014 summer staffing will require agility. The winners this year will be companies who remove the roadblocks that prevent great people from reaching them.Millennials, who make up a good share of summer hires, frustrate easily. If they have to jump through too many hoops theyll look elsewhere.Take a closer look at your hiring process. Are there steps that can be eliminated? Are candidates able to apply for work at their convenience as opposed to yours? If not, nows the time to streamline your hiring process.Start early. Summer camps and amusement parks are well on their way to being fully st affed, which means they are one step ahead of you. But dont despair. If you start immediately, and keep your foot on the gas pedal, you can make up for lost time. Thats where having a disciplined approach can be an advantage.Set aside 90 minutes every other day to devote to your hiring efforts. Add it to your calendar to keep focused on the task at pfote and youll be fully staffed in no time.Refresh your website. Just about every job seeker these days will look at your website before they decide to apply for a job. What does your website say about your business? Is your website old and tired or is it vibrant and inviting?Do your job descriptions accurately reflect your organization and the type of people you are seeking? Now is the time to spruce things up so that when you invite people to apply, they do so because they feel a connection to your business. And while you are at it, add a feature that makes it easy for applicants to apply with Monster.Reward employees for employee refer rals. Lets face it. Everyone could use a bit of extra cash in his or her paycheck. The ideal time to establish an employee referral plan is right before you get ready to hire. Why? Because these plans tend to work best when there is a level of excitement and this usually happens when new plans are introduced.Dont despair if your employee referral plan has been in place for a while. You can get the excitement back by bumping up your referral fee (it doesnt have to be by a lot) and by sending out reminders to your team regarding this awesome benefit. Ex-Google engineer James Damore sends signs of planning a class-action lawsuit

Ex-Google engineer James Damore sends signs of planning a class-action lawsuit Ex-Google engineer James Damore sends signs of planning a class-action lawsuit Are more James Damores on the horizon? Damore is a Google engineer who set off a national firestorm when the company  fired  him earlier this month for writing a controversial internal memo questioning the merits of diversity initiatives. On Wednesday, the law firm representing him announced they were looking for others like him, showing all the signs of planning a class-action lawsuit. The Dhillon Law Group, which is representing Damore in his case against Google, posted a blog post on its site Wednesday that encouraged people who shared Damore’s beliefs about Google’s policies to step forward and contact the firm.Fired Google engineer’s firm seeks Googlers who have been “blacklisted”The firm said it is interested in hearing from Google employees who have been “discriminated against at Google based on [their] political views” and people who believe they have been “defamed/slandered/smeared/blacklisted at Google” for their “views about affirmative action at Google. ”Although the Dhillon Law Group would not confirm whether it was looking into a class-action lawsuit, gathering a large group of Google employees who have been in similar situation as Damore would be an important step towards one.Damore is not alone in thinking like this. Many Google employees positively supported Damore’s memo and defended his claims, according to Motherboard.  Google engineer: ‘I can win’ legal caseDamore worked at Google as an at-will employee where you can be dismissed for any reason, but Damore, whose Twitter handle is @Fired4Truth, does not think his firing was fair and is not taking his firing quietly. On his ongoing press tour since his firing, Damore said he filed a complaint with the National Labor Relations Board on the basis that Google is “misrepresenting and shaming me in order to silence my complaints.” Because Damore said he filed a case with the NLRB prior to being fired, legal experts say he can use retaliatory conduct as a reason his fi ring was illegal. In an opinion editorial for the Wall Street Journal, Damore said that his polarizing 10-page manifesto, which sparked his firing, was a “reasoned, well-researched, good-faith argument.” In his argument, Damore said women are underrepresented in technology because they are more anxious and have lower stress tolerances than men. That biological argument, which has been debunked by scientists and widely criticized by former Googlers, got Damore fired for  Ã¢€œperpetuating gender stereotypes,” he said.Whatever kind of legal action Damore decides to take, he maintains that he has the law on his side. “I’ve been advised not to talk too much about my legal case, but I’ve been told that I can win it,” Damore said in a Reddit Ask Me Anything earlier this month. This is not the first time Google has faced legal controversy over discrimination this year. The tech giant is currently being investigated by the U.S. Department of Labor for an “extreme gender pay gap. ”And to make matters worse for Google, more women are coming forward with their stories of discrimination at the company. More than 60 current and former Google employees are considering suing Google for a hostile work culture and a pay disparity against women, according to their lawyer.

Why the Acronym NIMBY Is Used

Why the Acronym NIMBY Is Used Why the Acronym NIMBY Is Used NIMBY  is an acronym that stands for not in my backyard. It is used when citizens oppose a public works project or private development primarily because it will be built near where they live. These citizens often see the need for the project or development but oppose it because of the negative impact on them. A NIMBY attitude can be incredibly frustrating for local officials. Public works projects are necessary expenditures for local government, and they are needed to improve the quality of life in a community. Highway expansions, prisons, power plants, sewage treatment plants, and landfills are public works projects that frequently draw NIMBY opposition. Private developments - which local governments have some regulatory authority over - are a fact of life in a growing community. Economic development directors spend their working hours attracting businesses to their communities, but their efforts can be thwarted by well-organized and vocal NIMBY types. Elected officials like city council members pay attention to well-organized and vocal groups, so public administrators must be ready to respond to issues raised. New neighborhoods, low-income housing developments, shopping centers, stadiums, and amusement parks tend to garner NIMBY detractors. The Contrasting Opinions of Citizens Regarding New Projects and Developments Unfortunately, the positive and negative impacts of public works projects and private developments fall unevenly across citizens. Almost everyone can get behind building a new prison when current ones are overcrowded to the point of human rights concerns, but no one wants to live next to a prison. Ninety-nine percent of the voters may be for construction, but the people who own property adjacent to the proposed site are vehemently opposed. Similarly, most people like the idea of a new shopping mall in town. However, few would want the parking lot on the other side of their back fence. The Concerns of NIMBY Proponents NIMBY folks often give the impression they are against progress. While their propensity to use picket signs and chants comes off a little silly, the concerns they raise are important ones. They cite problems like traffic congestion, pollution, loud noise, increasing crime, decreasing real property value, harm to local business and loss of local character. Those who do not live near the proposed project or development may write off many of these concerns as implementation issues, but then again, those dismissing the concerns do not have to live next to the site. Mitigating the concerns rarely means problems will be avoided completely. Examples of NIMBY at Work Here are a few examples showing how NIMBY sentiments can impact real life.   In 2010 in Austin, Texas, Wal-Mart proposed to renovate the site of the closed Northcross Mall to open a store there. In a town known for hippies, liberals and development opponents, this part of town had a relatively high concentration of all these individuals. A group of neighborhood residents organized to fight the renovation. Some people opposed Wal-Mart because of its employment practices, so their issues with the development were on a larger scale than NIMBY concerns. Others opposed the development because of the potential impact on local business, traffic flow, and crime. In the end, Wal-Mart renovated the site, but the store was built smaller than originally proposed. The group Responsible Growth for Northcross fought the development for more than four years with their chief arguments as NIMBY issues. In recent years in Western Europe, the placement of wind farms has been a hot issue with NIMBY implications. The countryside is the ideal place to build wind farms since there are few large structures to block the wind. The problem comes when an actual site is proposed. People are happy to reduce their nation’s dependency on fossil fuels when it makes economic sense, but many rural residents do not want windmills added to the views from their bedroom windows. The NIMBY argument is the windmills mar the picturesque landscape.

5 Stories That Prove the Road to Success Is Not a Straight Line

5 Stories That Prove the Road to Success Is Not a Straight Line 5 Stories That Prove the Road to Success Is Not a Straight Line We tend to hear stories of overnight successes or people who were born with a passion for saving the world. We think, “Guess I’m just destined for this life then” rather than going for what we feel passionate or excited about. The good news is cases like those are the exception, not the rule. You can build whatever career you want, no matter what you’ve done before and where you want to go next. If you’re thinking about making a career change , find inspiration in these stories of people who made their own path to success and remember: you can do it too. Ali Payani, founder of LookinLA , has come up against many obstacles on his journey to be an entrepreneur. After starting his first company in Iran when he was 14 years old, he went on to get his Bachelors in Computer Science and Masters in IT Management- along the way he won a number of international technology competitions. When he was ready to develop his next startup, he hit his first roadblock: “I couldn’t register my startup in Dubai because Iranians were banned from starting their business! That was a bummer but didn’t make me quit. I just found a solution.” That solution: starting his company in another country. That’s when he came to I came to the U.S, where he was attending the Persian Tech Entrepreneurs summit in San Francisco. “I met successful investors and entrepreneurs and I shared my story and pitched my startup. I established Fortment, Inc., developing an air quality wearable device to monitor air toxics. I was using AI algorithms to increase detection accuracy and also developed a software solution to help COPD patients and individuals to be alarmed of toxic air changes.” While his work is in a field that’s important, when he applied to get an O-1 (extraordinary visa) to continue his business in the U.S. at that time, there was a travel ban issued. “No more visas for Iranians even in the U.S. Same problem as before, but again, it couldn’t stop me.” Instead of taking no for an answer, he applied and got the Visa after all. While he built one company, he started another to earn income: LookinLA, A Digital Marketing Agency. “Now LookinLA is six-figure company and I’m working 14 hours a day, every day. I’ve been rejected many times, got problems, no money, no projects, but never stopped planning to grow the business.” Steve Furst, who is now the Director of Operations for EPOCH , a student housing organization, has held nearly every role within his industry, including General Manager, Training Manager, Area Manager, Regional Manager, and Regional Supervisor. He’s also worked across 23 different collegiate markets all before becoming a partner doing work he’s truly passionate about. It was this windy road to finally becoming a partner that taught him everything he now uses to be successful in his career. Furst explains, “During this time, I’ve had experience working with conventional assets; conversions from conventional to student; HUD-funded properties; Affordable Housing programs; and every facet of Student Housing from new development to rehabilitations.” What’s more, he met many mentors along the way: “I’ve had the honor of serving under a number of excellent mentors, all of whom were able to advance my knowledge and skill through their leadership.” As Furst looks back on his career thus far, he knows it has only made him better at what he does. He says, “This variety of experience has been invaluable, but has taught me that there is always room to grow. I draw heavily on the experiential platform provided by my tenure in the industry. With much on the line, building a business from the ground up (literally, and figuratively), this experience has proven invaluable.” While his career could have stopped at any of those other positions, he was always eager to learn more and test his skills. Now, as a partner in a growing organization, he may just stick around for a while. Kevin Sneddon is now the Managing Partner of The Private Client Team at Compass Real Estate . He’s also the son of an NYC fireman and one of five children. When it was time for college, he went to a state school- ”the only affordable option for me”- and secured a summer internship at American Express.   But that internship was only step one. Sneddon says, “Through the process of making connections, I was able to parlay this internship to a full-time position in a different division of the company.” Sure enough, within 10 years he had climbed the ladder to Vice President. Despite his success with American Express, he felt something was missing. “I never felt it was my true calling. Having worked with my father in his window replacement ‘side business’ during high school, I spent a lot of time inside the beautiful brownstones of Park Slope. As it turns out, this was cultivating a real passion for real estate within me.” He left his VP position to become a real estate entrepreneur, starting as an investor and developer, and realized there was a need for specialized residential brokerage services. “I then founded my own brokerage called Project Real Estate, where I serviced the needs of real estate investors/developers.” What’s more, he leaned on the network he cultivated on Wall Street, while at American Express, to service high net worth individuals. “I am proud to say that I have brokered real estate transactions on behalf of some of the smartest and most successful people in the world.” Yet his story doesn’t end there. Most recently, earlier this year, he moved to Compass where he’s able to once again marry his passion and skills. “I was introduced to Robert Reffkin earlier this year, and was completely blown away by him, his vision for Compass, where he continues to flex his skills in real estate and finance to build a life he and his father can be proud of. “I consider myself successful because real estate is who I am- not just what I do.” Patrice Gopo is the author of All the Colors We Will See , an essay collection about race, immigration, and belonging. She speaks about the power of personal storytelling and her book was recently named a Barnes & Noble Fall 2018 Discover Great New Writers selection. Things started in a much different place for Gopo, though. She explains: “My road to success absolutely has not been a straight line. I started my career in the field of chemical engineering even though I had a passion for community transformation and the pursuit of social justice.” After several years in the field, she finally decided to head back to graduate school for her MBA and master of public policy. Her next move: “Using my skills to work in the field of community development. From there, her journey continued to South Africa where she met her future husband. After marrying and starting their life together in Cape Town, she hit a roadblock: she didn’t have a work permit. That’s when she discovered writing. “I discovered how sharing my personal stories around race, immigration, and belonging was, in fact, another avenue to speak into the public conversations happening around issues that mattered to me.” Her winding journey has taught her that nothing can stop us if we’re open to growing and learning. “This mindset makes me acutely aware that while I love writing, and I’m thrilled with how writing has become the avenue to help me speak into issues of injustice, I know there may be other career stops in the future.” What helped her get here today, breaking out of her career to try something new? “When I look back over these years, I think the key for me to get to where I am today was a willingness to take the next step and the next step without seeing a fully illuminated path ahead of me.” If you’ve spent more than 20 years as a professional chef in the food industry, you might think your career is set. Not for Kim Paciotti CPDT-KA, dog trainer and owner of Training Canines . She explains, “Working in the fast-paced food industry as a professional chef for more than 20 years is a daunting career. A career that would leave me frustrated and not sure how to carry on.” Not to mention, it’s an industry that “builds itself with young talent and ideas.”  Being 49 years old and still working 12 hour days were just a few reasons why Paciotti wanted to make a career change- not to mention, it was 2009 and “the economy was just as brutal as the job I was facing.” So she did what no one would have thought: she took the plunge to become a dog trainer. Not only did she already love dogs, but at the time her 10-month-old English Mastiff was deemed “not trainable” so she dove right in. She spent time in school, volunteered at rescues, and finally, after many years, received her certification through the Certification Council of Professional Dog Trainers. When that happened, her company, Training Canines, LLC, was formed. Now, she’s doing what she loves and specializes in early puppy development with a team of dog lovers around her. She even has a newly released book, “A Puppy’s Perspective: 101 Puppy Training Tips You Need to Know.” It just goes to show, you never know where your career can take you. The Road to Success is Never a Straight Line Going from chef to dog trainer or chemical engineer to public speaker may sound random, but there are no rules for your career. You make it what you want, whether you hold every job in the industry or fight through all obstacles to get to a country that will allow you to explore your passions. Your career is whatever you want it to be, so don’t hold yourself back.

How Stores Make You Spend More During Holidays

How Stores Make You Spend More During Holidays How Stores Make You Spend More During Holidays The holidays are here. It’s the most expensive time of the year for many people, and after theyve bought gifts for kids, family members, friends, white elephant exchanges, New Year celebrations, and even schoolteachers, theyre left with a crater-sized hole in their savings- or a massive credit card bill. You may think this is because it’s the season of buying, but retailers make it even harder on shoppers wallets by employing a cavalcade of tricks and techniques to get them spending with abandon. Using Deceptive Sale and Clearance Pricing This time of year is tough on peoples wallets. The retailers know it, and they want to take advantage of shoppers bargain-hunting sensibilities. After all, when you’re buying gifts by the cartload, money is on the top of your mind. So when you see a sweater for $19.99, with “was $39.99” above it, you think its a great deal, however, it is not. Your brain is wired to enjoy getting something for nothing, or way less than what other people are paying. An identical sweater with a $19.99 tag that is not on sale won’t sell as well. Its the same sweater, at the same price, but it is not seen as a deal.   Recently, stores including JC Penney, Kohl’s, Macy’s, and Sears were all sued over the deceptive practice of marking up the retail price of merchandise just to mark it down again. Therefore, dont assume the before-and-after prices are real. Chances are that sweater has been $19.99 all year. Designing the Store Layout to Maximize Profit Retailers spend millions of dollars researching and refining the layouts of their stores, all with the goal of getting the most profitable items in your shopping cart. For instance, you can bet that the products placed at eye level on the shelves are those that give the highest profit margin to the store; by contrast, if you have to bend down or ask for assistance to reach a product, its probably not as profitable. Another strategy revolves around the fact that most people are right-handed- over 88%- and thus will reach for items with our right hands. So you’ll see eye-catching displays to the right of the store entrance, offering high-margin products, or items they want to get rid of quickly. If you want to avoid falling into either of these traps, go against the flow. Veer left, and look to the top and bottom of the shelves where youll find better deals. Ending Almost Every Price With a 9 The difference between $199.99 and $200 is not just one cent. It’s a psychological trick that somehow makes the first price a lot more attractive than the second. Psychologists believe that, as consumers, people pay much more attention to the dollars than the cents. Also, specifically, people tend to focus on the first digit in the price. If the digit is a 1, then it is seen as less than 2, even if the difference is one cent. However, the second it jumps into the $200 category, the price is viewed between $200 and $300. That appears to be a significant jump in price, even though on paper it’s only a one-cent increase. Therefore, look carefully at the prices, and mentally note your $199.99 purchase as over $200. It will be a higher price after tax, except in a few states. Feeling in the Mood to Spend During the holidays, you are going to be overloaded with the smells, sights, and sounds that get you into a festive spirit where you are in the mood to give gifts and, therefore, spend more. You feel at home in the store if you’re listening to holiday music, smelling cinnamon and apple pie, and seeing bright red, green, and other cheerful colors. When you are relaxed and enjoying the store experience, you are more likely to take your time to browse  and buy. Interestingly, retailers also use this technique when they want you out quickly. For instance, when fast-food restaurants are experiencing a rush, they’ll switch up the festive music for something more aggressive and increase the volume. Don’t be fooled by the sensory overload. Make a list, get in, get out, and be on your way. Finding That Specially-Packaged Gift Sets and Bundles Will Cost You More The stores love putting together special holiday gift sets and packages. They’ve done the hard work for you, and you can get a great present or a hamper of food items in one fell swoop. But there’s a catch: You’ll discover that you are not getting value for your money. The bundled items and gift sets are usually more expensive than buying the items individually. Plus, the packages are bulked up to make them appear like they contain more than they actually do, and you are purchasing space and filler that looks impressive. Don’t get these gift sets unless you are sure you’re getting a deal.   Placing Lower-Priced Merchandise Next to Expensive Items This is a classic move by the retailer to get you to compare and contrast something that looks similar but is in fact very different at the core. For instance, you may see two TVs next to each other. Both 60”, both “smart,” and both offering HD. However, one is $1000 more than the other one. Well, look again. Maybe the higher-priced TV is from a manufacturer known for better design and quality. Or perhaps the HD on one TV is 720p versus 4K on the expensive one. The stores are actually charging more for the cheaper TV than youd see in other places, but by putting it next to a similar, higher-priced model, it looks like a steal. Offering Double-Up Deals That You Don’t Need Whether its buy one, get one free or something similar, the main driver of these deals is ?a  false economy. You see a great pair of jeans at $35. Also, if you buy a second pair, the price is $50, meaning you get a second pair for only $15, or each pair costs only $25. If this didnt appear to be an attractive deal, you likely would not have spent money on that second pair of jeans. In addition, other stores may be regularly selling those same jeans for $25. Therefore, be wary of double deals, as you may be spending more than you intended. Providing Easy Credit Options Retailers know many Americans are feeling the pinch a little more these days. But they don’t want that little fact to get in the way of their profit margins. They know you may not have the money to pay for something now, but theyre willing to offer you thousands of dollars in credit, spreading the payments over 18 months without any interest. Of course, there’s usually a catch. The big one: If you don’t pay off that card in the interest-free period, all the interest you would have accrued on it is now added on. Many people get stuck in the credit card trap around this time of year. If you really want something, consider a layaway plan, or finding a way to pay. But don’t charge everything to a credit card or use the store credit option if youre not sure you can pay. Sooner or later, the debt comes due. Discovering That Real Clearance Items Are Harder to Find Most stores, especially large retailers such as Target and Walmart, have certain aisles and “endcaps” devoted to sale and clearance items. But when December rolls around, those clearance areas become harder to find. This is the season of giving when stores know that you will pay full price. That’s not to say you won’t be able to find a few bargains, however, you will have to do a bit more digging to find them. Offering Customers Incentives to Buy Retailers look for other ways to get shoppers to spend money. They may offer free gifts with certain purchases. For example, if you spend a certain amount of money at a makeup counter, the store will give you a free gift such as a cosmetic or grooming kit. Without the free offer, you would not have been as willing to spend that amount of money. Other incentives to spend money include offers of store coupons and discounts. Remembering the Good Old Days Most people only remember the good times around the holidays. Overall, they tend to look back in fondness on the holiday season as a time of cheer, love, and giving. Stores tap into that through messages of classic films and songs. They will display iconic images of Norman Rockwell Americana, and give you the feeling of belonging. When you’re nostalgic, you’re happy. And when you’re happy, you spend more. Now, don’t let any of this put you off the holiday shopping season. Stores are not inherently evil. They are simply taking advantage of techniques that are known to increase sales, and keep their own employees in work. Just come armed with the knowledge to save you from these ingenious tricks, and youll be able to enjoy the holidays without spending too much.
